Frequently asked questions

The main difference lies in the yield strength: S275JR has a minimum yield strength of 275 MPa, while S355J2+N reaches 355 MPa. This means S355 can withstand loads 30% higher with the same thickness, allowing lighter designs. In addition, S355J2+N has better toughness at low temperatures (Charpy test at -20°C with a minimum of 27 J) and the +N designation indicates that it is normalized, which guarantees a more homogeneous microstructure and consistent mechanical properties throughout the piece.
The designation S355J2+N follows the coding system of standard EN 10025. The 'S' indicates structural steel. The number '355' represents the minimum yield strength in MPa. 'J2' designates the material's toughness: J means it has verified impact resistance via the Charpy test, and the '2' indicates that the test is carried out at -20°C with a minimum value of 27 Joules. The '+N' specifies the delivery condition: normalized, meaning it has undergone a normalizing heat treatment that improves the homogeneity of the mechanical properties.
For structures of execution class EXC2 according to Eurocode 3 (EN 1090-2), a 3.1 inspection certificate according to EN 10204 must be required. This certificate, issued by the manufacturer but verified by inspection personnel independent of the production department, includes test results specific to the supplied batch: chemical analysis, mechanical properties (yield strength, tensile strength, elongation), Charpy impact test where applicable, and dimensional verification. The 3.1 certificate guarantees the traceability of the material and its conformity with EN 10025-2.
In most cases, S355J2+N can be welded without prior preheating, provided that the recommendations of Eurocode 3 are followed and suitable welding procedures (WPS) are used. The carbon equivalent (CEV) of S355J2+N is generally below 0.45%, which gives it good weldability. However, for thicknesses above 30 mm or when working at ambient temperatures below 5°C, slight preheating (50-100°C) may be necessary to avoid the risk of hydrogen cracking. It is essential to use low-hydrogen filler consumables and follow the welding parameters specified in the WPS.
Mayor Steel maintains permanent stock of S275JR and S355J2+N structural plate in thicknesses ranging from 5 mm to 250 mm. The most in-demand thicknesses (5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100, 120 and 150 mm) are available for immediate dispatch in standard formats of 2000x6000 mm and 2500x8000 mm. For intermediate thicknesses or special dimensions, please check availability. All our materials include an EN 10204 3.1 certificate and are stored at our facilities in Zierbena (Bizkaia), with delivery service throughout Spain, Portugal and southern France.
These designations indicate the low-temperature toughness of the steel, according to the Charpy impact test. JR means the material has verified impact resistance at room temperature (+20°C) with a minimum of 27 J. J0 indicates resistance at 0°C with 27 J. J2 guarantees resistance at -20°C with 27 J. K2 offers the highest toughness, with resistance at -20°C but with 40 J of absorbed energy. For outdoor applications or cold climates, J2 or K2 is recommended. S355J2+N is the most versatile and sought-after grade for metal structures in Spain, as it offers an optimal balance between mechanical strength, toughness and cost.
The fundamental difference lies in its purpose and chemical composition. Structural plate (S275JR, S355J2+N) is designed to withstand mechanical loads in structures, with an emphasis on yield strength and ductility. Wear-resistant plate is formulated to resist abrasion and wear, with a high carbon content and alloying elements such as chromium, manganese and boron that increase surface hardness up to 400-500 Brinell. Structural plate is more economical and weldable, ideal for metal structures. Wear-resistant plate is more expensive and requires special precautions when welding, but is indispensable for mining, quarrying or machinery subject to intense friction applications.

S275JR and S355J2+N structural plate: technical distribution in Spain

What is structural plate and what is it used for?

Structural plate is a flat hot-rolled carbon steel product, specifically designed for structural applications according to standard EN 10025-2. The S275JR and S355J2+N grades are the most widely used in Spanish metal construction, both for building structures and for industrial machinery, bridges, warehouses and public works equipment. S275JR offers an excellent balance between mechanical strength and cost, with a yield strength of 275 MPa that makes it ideal for general structures. S355J2+N, with its 355 MPa yield strength and normalized condition, is the preferred choice for demanding projects requiring higher strength and better toughness at low temperatures.

EN 10204 3.1 certification and applicable standards

The correct specification of structural plate requires knowledge of the applicable standards. EN 10025-2:2019 defines the technical requirements for non-alloy structural steels, including mechanical properties, chemical composition and tolerances. EN 10204 establishes the types of inspection certificates: type 3.1 is mandatory for EXC2 class structures, and guarantees that the tests have been carried out on the actual batch supplied. At Mayor Steel we provide 3.1 certification as standard for all our S275JR and S355J2+N structural plates, facilitating the technical documentation required for CE marking of structures and compliance with Eurocode 3.
