Steel plate for industrial vehicles and special equipment
S690 QL to reduce weight and gain payload. 450 HB wear-resistant steel for hoppers and dump bodies that last. S355 J2+N for chassis and load-bearing structures. Permanent stock in Spain for production lines that can't stop.
The chassis material determines how much the vehicle can carry
In industrial vehicles, every kilogram you save in the structure is one more kilogram of legal payload. The choice of steel isn't just technical — it's economic.
S690 QL vs. S355
Going from 20 mm of S355 to 12 mm of S690 QL in tension-loaded elements achieves a 40% structural weight saving. On a semi-trailer, that saving translates directly into additional tons of legal payload.
450 HB wear-resistant steel vs. S355
A dump truck hopper in S355 lasts 6 to 12 months in intensive quarry work. The same hopper in 450 HB wear-resistant plate lasts 3 to 5 years. The material cost is recovered within the first year through avoided replacements.
No waiting on Central European factories
A trailer or special equipment assembly line can't wait 4-6 weeks for material to arrive from Germany or Belgium. Physical stock in Zierbena (Bizkaia) with fast deliveries throughout the peninsula.
What does a manufacturer of industrial vehicles and special equipment need?
Six real needs of a manufacturer working with traffic regulations, tight production cycles and customers who measure profitability per kilometer and per ton.
Tare weight reduction to maximize legal payload
In vehicles subject to MMA (Maximum Authorized Mass) limits, every kilogram of tare weight is one less kilogram of profitable cargo. The chassis and body material directly determines the vehicle's profitability for the operator.
Wear resistance in abrasive load areas
Dump truck hoppers, tipper bodies and load surfaces in contact with aggregates, rubble or bulk materials have a limited service life in structural steel. Wear-resistant steel multiplies that life by 3 to 6 times.
Guaranteed weldability in series production
Trailer and special equipment assembly lines cannot afford variability in weldability between batches. Controlled CEV and the 3.1 certificate with heat traceability guarantee production consistency.
Mechanical consistency across recurring orders
In series production of 50, 100 or 500 units per year, variability in mechanical properties between heats generates welding readjustments and rejections. Traceability via the 3.1 certificate makes it possible to detect and manage that variability.
Available stock to keep the assembly line running
A semi-trailer or special equipment production line that stops due to lack of plate loses production worth tens of thousands of euros per day. Stock in Spain eliminates that risk compared to long-lead-time suppliers.
High-volume supply capacity with stable pricing
Manufacturers with regular production need supply contracts with agreed monthly volumes and fixed pricing. Steel market volatility makes cost predictability especially valuable throughout the manufacturing chain.
Mayor Steel products for industrial vehicles and special equipment
Each grade has its function within the vehicle. The right choice of steel by zone and application determines final weight, service life and manufacturing cost.
S690 QL high-strength plate — The key to gaining payload
Application: Main chassis of high-tonnage semi-trailers and trailers, longitudinal beams and crossmembers of load platforms, load-bearing structures of special equipment (auxiliary cranes, elevating platforms, construction vehicles), articulated arms of lifting equipment integrated into vehicles. Any structural element where weight reduction is directly proportional to increased legal payload.
Technical advantage: With a yield strength of 690 MPa compared to 355 MPa for S355, it allows reducing the thickness of structural elements while maintaining load capacity. The weight saving varies by loading type: up to 40% in pure tension, 25-30% in bending and 15-20% in compression. On a tautliner semi-trailer, switching from S355 to S690 QL on the main longitudinal beams can mean between 400 and 800 kg less tare weight, which converts into additional legal payload.
Critical restriction to communicate to the technical department: S690 QL is not permitted to undergo PWHT (post-weld heat treatment). If the manufacturing process includes PWHT, this grade is not the right choice. Welding consumables must be high-strength: E11018-G for MMA, ER110S-G for MIG/MAG. Heat input must be kept between 0.5 and 2.0 kJ/mm. Low-temperature toughness is ≥30 J at -40°C (S690 QL) or -60°C (S690 QL1) for vehicles operating in cold climates.
| Element | S355 thickness | Equivalent S690 QL thickness | Weight saving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beam under tension | 20 mm | 12 mm | -40% |
| Crossmember under bending | 15 mm | 10 mm | -28% |
| Platform under bending | 10 mm | 7 mm | -25% |
450 HB wear-resistant plate — For the areas that take the punishment
Application: Dump truck and tipper truck hoppers, load bodies in contact with aggregates and rubble, load platform floors receiving bulk material, linings for waste management equipment, wear plates on compactors and waste transfer vehicles. Any vehicle surface working in continuous abrasive contact.
Technical advantage: 450 HB is the industry standard: certified Brinell hardness of 425-475 HB, service life 4-6 times longer than S355 under intensive abrasive work. A dump truck hopper in S355 lasts 6-12 months in quarry work; the same hopper in 450 HB lasts 3-5 years.
S355 J2+N structural plate — The chassis and load-bearing structure
Application: Chassis of general-purpose trailers and standard-load semi-trailers, load-bearing structures of special equipment where weight is not critical, structural reinforcements and connectors, supports for auxiliary systems (hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical), bodies of service vehicles and work platforms.
Technical advantage: The benchmark grade for series production: optimal balance between strength, weldability and cost. CEV generally <0.45% guarantees in-line weldability without preheating up to 30 mm under normal conditions. The J2 grade ensures 27 J impact toughness at -20°C for vehicles operating in cold climates or low-temperature night environments.
Heavy S355 J2+N structural plate ≥ 60 mm — High-load components
Application: Articulation axles for special equipment, anchor points for auxiliary cranes integrated into vehicles, bases of lifting systems, fifth-wheel coupling plates on high-tonnage tractor units, supports for high-load hydraulic cylinders on large-capacity tippers.
Technical advantage: For components with high concentrated loads where the cross-section cannot be reduced for geometric reasons. Stock in thicknesses of 60, 80 and 100 mm with immediate availability, replacing machined or cast parts with heavy plate for greater reliability and lower cost.
Pressure vessel plate P265 GH / P355 GH
Application: Fuel or pressurized fluid tanks integrated into special equipment, tanker vehicles for pressurized fluid transport regulated by PED, high-pressure hydraulic accumulators on construction equipment, pneumatic system vessels on industrial vehicles.
Technical advantage: Materials harmonized under PED 2014/68/EU: the equipment manufacturer does not need specific approval from the notified body for use in pressure parts. A 3.1 certificate with heat traceability is mandatory for the equipment's technical documentation.
Why industrial vehicle manufacturers choose Mayor Steel
Five differential value arguments for manufacturers working in series production, who need material consistency and can't afford to stop their assembly line.
⚡ Real stock in Spain = an assembly line that never stops
A trailer or special equipment production line that stops due to lack of material loses production worth tens of thousands of euros per day. Warehouse in Zierbena (Bizkaia) with fast delivery throughout the peninsula. No dependence on 4-6 week Central European lead times.
⚙️ Guidance on transitioning to high-strength steels
Switching from S355 to S690 QL in the chassis isn't just a grade change: it requires adapting the WPS, changing welding consumables and recalculating thicknesses. Mayor Steel's technical team provides guidance through that process so weight reduction doesn't create problems on the production line.
📋 Heat consistency on recurring supplies
In series production, variability in mechanical properties between heats forces adjustments to welding parameters and can lead to rejections. The 3.1 certificate with heat number makes it possible to detect and manage that variability before it reaches the line.
📦 Full range: from chassis to hopper from a single supplier
S690 QL for the chassis, S355 for the structure, 450 HB wear-resistant steel for the hopper and P265GH for the pressure tank. All in the same order, with a single point of contact, a single delivery note and consolidated documentation. No need to manage four different suppliers for the same vehicle.
💰 The economic argument that closes the purchase decision
A trailer manufacturer's purchasing director doesn't just evaluate the price per ton of plate. They evaluate the total cost: material price plus the cost of line stoppages due to lack of stock, plus the cost of rework due to quality variability, plus the cost of warranty replacements due to insufficient service life in wear areas. Mayor Steel helps optimize that total cost, not just the purchase price of the steel.

Frequently asked questions from industrial vehicle and special equipment manufacturers
Technical answers to the real questions of technical directors and purchasing managers in the sector.
The saving depends on the type of loading on each element. For beams under pure tension (the dominant loading on a tautliner semi-trailer), the saving can reach 40% by going from 20 mm of S355 to 12 mm of S690 QL. For crossmembers under bending, the typical saving is 25-30%. For elements under compression with buckling risk, it drops to 15-20% because the moment of inertia depends on the cube of the thickness, not linearly. In practical terms, on a 13.6-meter semi-trailer, the total chassis saving can range between 400 and 800 kg depending on the design, which converts directly into additional legal payload. We can advise on the specific saving for your current design.
Yes, necessarily. Standard welding consumables for S355 are not compatible with S690 QL because they don't provide sufficient mechanical strength in the weld joint. S690 QL requires high-strength consumables: E11018-G coated electrodes for MMA, ER110S-G wires for MIG/MAG with Ar/CO2 (82/18) shielding gas. In addition, the WPS (Welding Procedure Specification) must be adapted to control heat input between 0.5 and 2.0 kJ/mm. The change of consumables and procedure is a one-time adaptation investment that is quickly paid back through the weight savings achieved. Mayor Steel can guide the technical department through that transition process.
In intensive quarry work with crushed rock material, the difference is very significant. A hopper made of S355 has an estimated service life of 6 to 12 months before wear compromises its integrity and requires replacement. The same hopper in 450 HB wear-resistant steel lasts 3 to 5 years under equivalent conditions, a multiplying factor of 4 to 6 times. The cost difference of the material (450 HB costs approximately 2-3 times more than S355) is recovered with the first avoided replacement, which on a quarry dump truck can represent between €8,000 and €20,000 in material and labor, not counting vehicle downtime.
Yes. For manufacturers with regular production, Mayor Steel designs supply agreements with agreed annual or quarterly volumes, aiming to minimize the number of different heats supplied during the period to maximize mechanical consistency on the line. The 3.1 certificate with heat number on each supply allows the technical department to trace any variability in welding parameters and correlate it with the corresponding material batch. Let us know your estimated volume per grade and we'll plan it together.
Pressure vessels integrated into industrial equipment or special vehicles are subject to the PED Directive 2014/68/EU if they exceed certain pressure and volume thresholds. For these applications, the vessel material must be P265GH or P355GH per EN 10028-2, which are materials harmonized under PED: their use does not require specific approval from the notified body. A 3.1 certificate with heat traceability is mandatory for the equipment's technical documentation. It cannot be replaced with S355 without going through an additional specific approval with the notified body, which lengthens and increases the cost of the equipment's certification process.
Mayor Steel maintains permanent stock of steel plate in Spain and Portugal, with a warehouse in Zierbena (Bizkaia), enabling fast delivery times to manufacturers of industrial vehicles and special equipment throughout the peninsula. The Basque Country is home to a significant part of Spain's trailer and special equipment manufacturing industry, and from Zierbena we also serve manufacturer clusters in Navarra, Catalonia, Valencia and Andalusia with consolidated transport. Compared to Central European suppliers with 4 to 6 week lead times, Mayor Steel is the difference between an assembly line that runs and one that waits.
